Thyroid

Prof. Hartstein, in conjunction with an endocrinologist, will determine the best combination of treatments for the patients presenting with thyroid eye disease (TED) after the office evaluation.

Thyroid eye disease can affect:

  • Eyeball
  • Eyelids
  • Eye muscles
  • Eye socket

The upper and lower lids often retract (open widely causing ocular surface discomfort).  The eyeball can be very red and inflamed, and can also bulge forward, even causing damage to the optic nerve. Some patients may develop double vision due to enlarged and tight eye muscles.

There are a variety of medical and surgical treatments for thyroid eye disease.

Surgical treatments of thyroid eye disease include:

  • Lowering the upper eyelid
  • Raising the lower eyelid
  • Orbital decompression
